In oint of fact during Vietnam the Viet Cong used the red corsses on medics'
helmets for target practice.  Many combat unit medics did not wear the red
cross on their helmets for exactly that reason.  The Cong also used as targets
the red crosses on ambulances and medevac helicopters.
