Media, be it print, broadcast, or on-line, sensationalise. And promote
"worst-case" scenarios. It's what sells. Makes little difference
if the medium
involved is left-leaning, right-leaning or attempting to remain
"centrist". If
it bleeds, it leads. 

And since that is the case, it's fairly easy to find cites which, although
there is little beyond conjecture to back them, support one's position.

Don Henley had it right in a cut from his debut solo album. The cut was "Dirty
Laundry".
