Mike, is it?
BD>Let's back out out of Blue Wave for a moment to issue the ATi3,
BD>shall we? All right, that's done & it says:

 BD>04-00971-720 34AC
HS> That's the latest firmware version of that modem, and it's proven to
HS> be very solid with connectivity and stable connections.

BD> And although it's true that multiple CRC's aren't the "fault" of a
BD> modem, it is a fact that when you must re-dial frequently to connect
BD> you do have some modem problem.
HS> Yes, the CRC errors generally indicate a problem on the system, after
HS> the data is already passed the modem, but could also be due to 'noise'
HS> on the line which can send the modem into long retrains. If you are
HS> having problems making the initial connection, this is usually
HS> related to conditions on the phone line, especially if you are seeing
HS> problems more often when connecting to particular systems more so than
 HS> with others.
There never is any fading, noise, scratchiness, or interference heard
when connected by voice on that same line..
HS> This really doesn't appear to be a modem problem, but it is not
HS> inconceivable that the modem could be defective. I still wouldn't
HS> consider returning it for repair unless the problems could be
HS> duplicated on other systems and at other locations, using other
 HS> software.
It is always possible that the local phone company has degraded the
service recently. Transfer speeds *are* down somewhat from August
when connected to several local BBS's at which there has been no re-
dial or CRC problem. I checked to see if connecting in the house via
another (internal) extension might help. What I haven't tried is un-
plugging the several instruments that are scattered around the house
on that same line to see if one has gone bad unbeknownst & is causing
these faults..
BD> At this point, neither I nor QMPro are using anything other than
BD> the default ("ATZ"?) to wake up the modem.. BUT it does seem that
BD> part of the trouble is the software. ...
HS> Also, ATZ will reset the modem and configure the modem with the
HS> settings stored in profile 0 of the modem's NRAM, so we don't know what
HS> exactly ATZ is doing unless we know what, if anything has been stored
HS> in the modem. If you want something very basic to initialize
HS> the modem, you might want to use AT&F&C1&D2 to wake it up.
HS> Michael -- Hayes Online Services
I will certainly give that a try. Meanwhile, due to having to call
long distance and finding Fido is as fast or faster, I left a note
last night on the Hayes Support BBS that I prefer to use this route
over calling there, especially if it's essentially the same folks in
each case who will answer..
Although I still wonder where the very first query that I uploaded
there disappeared to..
Maybe a second line would be worthwhile.. Craig Ford suggested adding
a "Q6%C0" for calling those BBS's I have trouble with. I have the
slightly more detailed manual from the Accura 14.4, didn't find that
one in there, but there was an S Register setting for bad lines in
there somewhere.
