For the 56 Chevy, I bought a 700R4 from Bow-Tie Overdrives in CA...they
supplied me with a test meter for that trans and it came with instructions
in how to set it up and then test the trans before it is driven. It has to
have a certain amount of pressure at the test port, which was closer to
300 than it was to 100. It may have less pressure at the cooler line
ports, but?

That might still work with a trans as used for a small car. It may also
work at the cooler line ports for some of the older non-ECM controlled
transmissions.
