Hi
 I don't think your calculations are correct? For an
8" F8, my calculations say that a 3.5" diameter spherometer
should read a little shy of .012". Here is my calculations:

 8" f8 has a focal length of 8" * 8 = 64". This
is a ROC of 2 * 64" = 128"

Using right triangles and 3.5" I get the equation:

(128 - x)^2 + (3.5/2)^2 = 128^2

This expands to:

x^2 - 256*x + 3.0625 = 0

I used one one of the net quadratic equation calculators to get:

 x = 0.01196

See:

http://www.math.com/students/calculators/source/quadratic.htm

or use:

 x= ( -b +- sqroot(b^2-4ac) ) / 2a

 on your own calculator.

Later
Dwight
