An Internet World First for Telstra Big Pond and Motorola
27 February 1997
Telstra Big Pond Internet customers will be among the first in the
world to gain access to 56Kbps modem technology with the launch of
Motorolas new generation of ModemSURFR high speed modems.
Australia has been selected for the world first launch of Motorolas
new range of 56Kbps modems, which are designed to greatly increase the
download speeds for Internet users.
Telstra Big Pond, Motorola, Polaroid and Ascend jointly launched the
new modem in Sydney today.
Mr Tony Richardson, Business Development Manager, Telstra Big Pond,
said Motorola chose Australia and Telstra for the worldwide launch in
recognition of this countrys position at the forefront of the fast
expanding global Internet market.
"The launch of the 56Kbps modem is another step in the evolution of
the Internet in this country. Our support for Motorolas 56Kpbs modem
demonstrates our commitment to maintaining technological leadership
and improving customer service," Mr Richardson said.
Mr Richardson said Telstra Big Pond planned to release 56Kbps Internet
access capability initially to small and medium business customers by
the middle of the year, with the residential market to follow later in
the year.
"Telstra is making continual improvements to its range of Big Pond
products and services, underlining its commitment to the development
and growth of the Internet in this country, for the benefit of all
Australians," Mr Richardson said.
"Faster dialup speeds will be a major factor in the on-going
development of the Internet. Currently, it is estimated that there are
tens of thousands of new users coming on line each month in
Australia," he said.
"Telstra broke new ground last November with the launch of the Big
Pond. The service has been hugely successful in demystifying the
Internet for new customers.
"Our aim was to create a product that drew all of Telstras Internet
services under one brand, and simplified access and use. We have
achieved that and continue to experience strong growth," Mr Richardson
said.
