Exactly the same situation here.  However, although related, elk and deer are
different.  Most deer (eg white tailed deer) are generally smaller than elk. 
The common deer here on Vancouver Island are very tiny.  I've seen dogs that
are larger.  No moose on the island that I know of.

I think that might be more common in Norway and Finnland.  I don't know the
equivalent saying in either of their native languages but I am sure they have
an equivalent.  :-)

I do know the similar phrase in English and have used it a few times in my
life.  Same with beavers.

Speaking of Finnland and beavers, I read somewhere a couple years ago that
someone in Finnland was killed by a beaver when it bit him on the ankle
severing a major artery.  This is the only case I have ever heard of a beaver
killing a human.
