Have your considered getting a UPS...for the computer, of course...and 
plugging your answering machine into it as well?  If you have a lot of 
power problems, a decent UPS could easily pay for itself in computer 
repairs you don't have to pay for...not to mention lost data, which can 
be priceless.  
Of course, if the answering machine and computer must be in separate 
locations, this won't work.  But I'd still recommend a UPS for the 
'puter, if you don't already have one.  And don't forget surge 
protection for the phone line(s) as well as the AC supply!
