Having contributed tons of freeware to the Apple ][ platform way back when,
I believe there are a number of other reasons as well. For example a lot of
the stuff I did back then I would give away because I met someone else who
had a need for it. I wasn't really thinking about supporting the platform
at all, it wasn't pride or passion either, it was just software that I had
written and didn't mind sharing. I wrote it because I wanted it, I gave it
away because someone else needed it.

I see a lot of that in the linux world, knoppix for example.
