It depends on the veggies you are going to grow. I used to have a garden in
planters on my porch. Nothing fancy or huge, but a nice little plot of
'whatever' for that year.
Here's what I found took well to 'container gardening'. The containers were
those red-wood long planters, about 8 inches deep and filled with potting
soil.
Leaf Lettuce
Green Onions
Radishes (small type red ones, not oriental)
Herbs (all sorts)
Strawberries
Cant say as I tried much else but these all worked. OH! Forgot 'baby
carrots' but then they werent terribly sucessful (mostly due to lighting and
only tried once).
Want tomatoes? They work well too but you need a deeper pot. Those big ones
sold for 'trees' work just fine for them. Can use a smaller one if planting
just cherry tomato plants but expect a smaller yield.
Grin, I'm so used to container gardening, that now that we have a house, Don
and i naturally just used the fence edge. It has a wooden fence behind, and
a retainer wall making it about 8 inches across and as deep as needed. Thats
where our 'garden' is. Working pretty good but didnt plant much and panted a
bit late this year. Got peas (probably would work in a container), green
beans (might work but I bet you need a 12 inch depth), green onions,
tomatoes, and the lettuce which didnt come up (planted too late? Cheap
seeds?). BIG patch of mint that didnt die from last year.
Next year, we plan to put in a real garden but we are starting slow and
steady. The ground needs to be prepped carefully over time as it is a sandy
poor soil.
