I think you nailed it. (Others will know more definitively.)

A file called BWREPFIX.??? will fix it. (I've deleted the downloaded file
so I can't quote the exact file name. It's called Blue Wave Reply Fix, if
you need to hunt for it.) What it does, is intercept the *.REP creation
process, and works some magic on its creation before it is compressed.

Someone here will be able to give you a more definitive explanation. The
bottom line is, if you can edit a text file, the documentation is really
short, and explains exactly what you need to do.
