On unix, its usually "sh < ??????" where ?????? is your shar
archive file. 

As far as unpacking shar archives in a DOS environment goes, an oldish
Simtel index I keep handy yields 3 references for "unshar", all
in the FILEUTIL directory: SHAREXE.ZIP (dated '88), TOADSHR1.ZIP (dated
'89, incl TP src) and UNSHAR.ZIP (dated '91, incl C src).
