-=> Quoting Jim Miller to Martin Ridgley <=-
MR> Jaco Pastorius said much the same thing. He was often asked (by
MR> interviewers who wanted to know about his equipment, his set-up and
MR> various modifications), how he got his incredible tone. Almost
MR> invariably Jaco's reply was that his sound was in his hands.
JM> While I certainly don't dispute that, those old Acoustic amps he used
JM> had a lot to do with it. I've played several Acoustic amps and they
JM> all seem to have Jacotone built into them. I'm sure he could have
JM> used any amp to get that sound (I get semi-convincing Jacotone out of
JM> my Ampeg SVT-III Pro), but those Acoustic amps sure do make it easy.
JM> Plus turning the neck pickup down a little bit contributes.
The Fender he played on had a bit to do with it as well... Isn't it true
that he knocked the frets off of it to make it fretless?
I also play on an Acoustic amp through a 2x15 Kustom cabinet and man, I
think you're right about that "Jacotone". I used to play an Ibanez SDGR
4-string fretless through that puppy and it was smoooooth. I think my
avorite
track (that I've heard so far) from Jaco is his adaptation of "Miles Mode"
written by John Coltrane...
