A LOT depends on the block size, number of users, additional services
running on the server,
etc.  Personally, I always allocate 16 mb per gig, up to 64 GB RAM, and then
about 8 GB after.
Keep in mind that 3.x was never intended for servers in the 4+ GB range --
it's real wasteful on
memory at this point and not all that stable (memory leaks mean you ought to
reboot it at least
once a month at this point).
