CT> Anyone here happen to know what the standard air wing for a
CT> 1950's era Carrier was BEFORE the F-4 Phantom came on the scene? Or
I can only really help you with fighter-type aircraft. The USN
flew the FJ Fury (naval Sabre), Banshee, Voodoo, and Demon. The
RN used the Seafire, Sea Fury (different to the FJ Fury), and Sea
Vampire for a while after the war but I'm not sure if they
continued to use them into the 50s (I think they also had a
fighter with similar configuration to the Vampire and was also
built by DeHavilland). They also flew funny-looking recon and
subhunting aircraft like the Gannet.
The Skyhawk was introduced around the same time as the Phantom,
or earlier, but another ground attack aircraft (enormous radial
piston engine) was flown before then. I forget its name but they
were used very successfully for close support during the Vietnam
War. (Skyraider perhaps?)
CT> perhaps what classes of carrier were used after WWII and up to the time
CT> the Kittyhawk and Nimitz classes were launched? I have the air wings
I don't recall any U.S. carrier launched after about '45 until
those classes. I'm hardly an authority though. :)
