Now that I think back on it, my TR7 had a similar problem.  I resolved
it by resoldering things on the display board (in stages) until the
problem went away.  I started with the connector pins, then progressed
to ICs and such.  I also checked connector soldering on attached
boards, and even the backplane (motherboard?).  ISTR that the backplane
board looked to be wave soldered, and this can often lead to less than
optimal filleting (solder too thin) of the solder connections around
pin connectors.

Now I need to do the 'bumped pots' alignment and fix the 23kc spur
disease...
