If you're not versed in electronics, I'd first suggest that you take a look at what it takes to program a microcontroller or microprocessor first and see if you can handle that chore. The PIC series is full of choices, including several that can drive LCD displays directly. I will note that programming can be a tricky little chore as a computer will do exactly what you tell it to do, not what you think that you told it to do!
