I really appreciated your comments which are similar to others I've
received in reply to similar postings in my other Fido echoes.
SE>>I think the strength of Fido is the willingness of the community
SE>>to share information on a friendly volunteer basis. That's
SE>>going to continue even if we access the echoes by telneting to
SE>>a BBS outside of our local telephone area. There will be fewer
SE>>BBS's but more traffic and more communication. That's what
SE>>happened with the Usenet newgroups.
That's what a friend in Doghouse echo said also. She is the SYSOP
of a board in the Dallas area and the founder of the Dog Fanciers
Echo which became backboned a few years ago. Her board is a specialty
board catering to dog fanciers and to police officers who use canine
partners. She has found that her board is *growing* rather than
diminishing in today's market because lots of out of state people
are now telneting in to her for messaging and/or files.
SE>>As a note to Chris, I'd like to say that even if this thread
SE>>seems way off topic it is important to discuss it here because,
SE>>as Anne points out, many people are concerned about maintaining
SE>>access to this echo.
That's why I mentioned it. I know how lucky I am to have the access
I have and that it isn't the same all over. So, if there are other
ways to keep a connection to Fido when a user here has his/her board
go down (own or one logged onto as a user), I wanted everyone to be
aware that there are options to look into.
