D>The notes to _The Greater Antilles Sampler_ say that QS was Phil's
D>pre-Roxy group, and the album (_Mainstream_, I think) is sort of
D>a reunion effort.
Is that the one with the White Noise track? I have that on tape somewhere, I
think (a genuine commercial release).
SD> Phil did a bunch of other stuff outside RM, too.
D>I concur with Kenneth that _801 Live_ is a real good one,
Some of Eno's stuff grates on me. "Diamond Head" is brilliant, and the intro
to "Tomorrow Never Knows" is amazing on headphones.
If he was less restrained,
D>and into leads more than rhythm, Roxy Music would probably be
D>considered more Prog nowadays. In those pre-punk days, they were
D>certainly exploring more new ground than (fill in the blank).
THey ar4e (cool typing, hmm) often cited as an example of art rock that isn't
prog rock, if such a separation is really possible (KC gets called art rock
by mainstream critics, but they're definitely prog). Kind of like Procol
Harum, who just did their own thing regardless.
D>even more Not Prog than David Bowie...
I wouldn't have said that, personally, excluding a couple of Bowie albums
(especially _Space Oddity_), he just doesn't seem prog to me. I found them
to be (Clark can fill in the blank here): Wildly uneven. Some songs like
"If There Is Something" are on my "A" list, but much of their work doesn't
appeal to me.
D>Anyway, Manzanera contributed to some of the better albums by John
D>Cale and Brian Eno, too. And the Christmas CD Manzanera and Mackay
D>"Presented" on Rykodisc (_The Players Christmas_) is one of the best
D>acoustic instrumental albums in that genre...
He did travel a lot. That generally speaks well of ability and adaptability
in a musician.
