Under "Frame buffer Devices" make sure CONFIG_FB_BOOT_VESA_SUPPORT is either m
or y. Setting it to y doesn't hurt anything. Also under "Frame buffer
hardware drivers" CONFIG_FB_VESA should also be set to m or y. Again y doesn't
hurt.
As for the vga setting it depends on your card but if you don't know then on
first boot set "vga = ask" so that it will prompt you to choose a setting which
you can later use as the default in your boot loader.
It is just that simple.
