subject: Quicken is time consuming

|I gave Quicken a try - several times - I don't like it. It sucks.
|
|Now, I use Excel 5 and have written several spreadsheets to track
|checking, savings, credit cards, investments, taxes, etc. etc. You
|can't beat having the flexibility to configure each and every cell
|to your exact requirements. I don't know if you've ever given it a
|try; version 5 has a most excellent Formula Wizard.
|
|Quicken is back in it's neat little box, waiting in the junk pile f
|the next garage sale . . .
Quicken is outstanding as an account management tool. Providing
equivalent functionality in a spreadsheet of Quicken's reconciliation
abilities, transaction memorization and scheduling, report and chart
creation, etc. would be cumbersome, time consuming and error prone.
Despite it's aspirations, however, Quicken is NOT a complete financial
management tool. It's budget tracking capabilities, for example, are
not even adequate for my needs. I find a budget as a static projection
to be essentially useless. I therefore use Excel to create and use a
dynamic budget that records my expenses through the month, tracking an
original budget projection and an updated status that lets me know
both up to date income and expenses, and projected income and expenses
still outstanding.
Quicken does certain things very well. Because it doesn't handle all
financial tasks as adroitly as it handles account management is no
reason to dismiss it as a useless tool. That you do so makes me suspect
that you haven't thoroughly explored the program.
