Since the Doom engine went open source there have been a ton of new DOOM
engines created, most of them offer robust client/server support over tcp/ip
and other connection methods. Server browsers, map/content streaming, you name
it.

I'd start with Google, search for DOOM Modern Versions maybe? I found one for
you that I tested. (Got online in about 3 minutes, that included the time it
took to find my doom.wad files) connected to a server and played for 30
seconds before a bot fragged me. http://zandronum.com/

Open Source, 64 player support, supports all ZDoom and GZDoom mods, etc.
