1) Golded's area screen and message header's CP437 line drawings don't display
properly in a UTF-8 console.

I'm looking for a solution that works well on my own system, rather than using
hacks and workarounds to things look like they're working. slrn seems to act
quite a bit like Golded in regards to coloring and basic movement, and when
paired up with vim I seem to be able to both read and write in my current
locale while utilizing iconv rather than old outdated character translation
files that only support 256 characters.
Lastly, why not? :)
