Hi Cloyce,
CO> Straw I can see being free. If you've got a source of free
CO> alfalfa, I'll hook up the trailer and come see you. That stuff is
CO> going for abour $4.25 -$4.75 per small square bale around here (40
CO> to 75 pound bales). I like to feed my cattle about 3 bales of
CO> prairie hay to one bale of alfalfa.
This stuff has been setting for at least 4 years and I don't think anything
with half a mind would eat it. Your price on alfalfa seems a lot higher than
what I can get it for. I'm getting a truck load (156 bales - large bales,
100-125 lbs.) brought in this week at 6.75 per bale (that's number 1 grade).
Have about 20 horses (TWH's) and 2 burros here and use an average of a little
over 3 bales a day. Then there is grain and A&M cost on top of that. If I
could figure out how to use the stuff that comes out of the other ends of
these critters, I'm sure I could build the Empire State Building in no time,
and given a few more weeks have the World Trade Center standing beside it.
What part of OK are you in? My grandfather ran a good sized summer grazing
ranch in S.E. KS until he died in a ranch accident in the 40's and I can not
see why you would need to buy feed in that general area.
Gerry
