I tried my GT RTS3 (aluminum also) and it doesn't activate the sensors 
either. I tried leaning the bike over also.  Next I'll try my bike shoe 
cleats directly on the sensor wire but I doubt there is enough metal in them 
to trip the switch.
...and that's my worthless opinion.
