Hmmm.  Maybe I have it confused with the Mandrake install I've done since
then.  Looking back at when Susan installed RH 8.2 on the laptop, all the
video configuration portion of the install went like this:

"Next came the video configuration. Red Hat identified the video as an
8-megabyte S3 Savage/MX card and Susan hit Enter to accept. Next came the
monitor. Red Hat said it is unprobed and suggested 31.5-48.5 KHz for
horizontal, and 50-70 Hz for vertical. Who were we to argue? Susan hit
Enter again. Ditto for the 16-color at 1024x768 resolution."

Nothing about automatically testing the configuration, or even suggesting
that it be testing.  Do you remember what resolution RH suggested?
