FA> Hi James,
JR> You are getting through now Fred. Sorry to hear about the ice storm
JR> and what it has caused. I have been watching the news reports and
JR> so far we have been lucky here in Toronto. Today it's snowing rather
JR> heavy and the roads are icy and treacherous.
JR> I can't imagine being forced to go without heat for that length of
JR> time!
FA> Hi James,
FA> Yes the storm was nasty, I haven't seen such a storm since I
FA> was a kid. 3 inches+ of ice on everything. People are in serious
FA> shape in some areas, it is a disaster. Hope it doesn't do the same
FA> to you down there in TO. Thanks for the message :).......
FA> Happy Trails,
FA> Fred.

Hi there Fred!
By the look of it you depend somewhat on your computer, so being without
the power to run it or a few days must have been miserable for you?
Yes, the storm was something else, and I would imagine that they will
begin to take a long hard look at improved utility poles, and such
possible stress on large hydro towers. Going underground for prime
feed lines might be the alternative for the future. The weak points
in the design of those large towers should be photographed, and from
that it would be possible to improve on the design for that kind of
weighting. No one expected that kind of loading being put on those
towers. From what I hear the system is suffering band-aid type repair
so it will be an ongoing process in order to get the system back to
what it should be. The losses in agriculture are staggering.
Well, I suppose that we are off-topic, being in the UFO echo with this,
but it makes one think that we exist as very fragile beings, and
an intervention from a technological standpoint by advanced intelligences
might not be too bad an idea after all! :-)
Steinmetz envisioned electrical power being transmitted through the
air waves without wires as conductors, and that combined with power
independent generators might be the solution for the future?
Entire cities being moved underground as in Things to Come (H.G. Wells),
would be a solution for the environment and for better protection of
essential services.
Cheers!
James
