Sun Microsystems sure thought so when they were still alive.  It is one of
their children.  Mind you they had to sue Microsoft over it since MS seemed to
think it was their bastard child.  Same could be said Google these days. 
Speaking for myself I never got into Java and now that the Sun has permenantly
set I am glad I didn't.  Also many in the know agree with this assessment and
there has been talk for years about declaring it a dead language.
