Oh! If you are going to use Vice, be aware that there is a bug in 2.4 that causes this whole thing to fail. The 1581 emulation in 2.4 is broken. You have to use 2.1 or 2.2 (I was able to get 2.2 to work but it was a little flaky sometimes).
