Oh, I'm sure that the GIMP is capable of doing the job.  Problem is, I have 
never been able to figure out how to do much of anything useful with it. 
Granted, it's been several years since I've tried.  Does anything resembling 
comprehensible user documentation exist?  Last time around, it was only 
slightly removed from "..read the source" :-).
