hh> Part of the problem is that the Essence convention which is
a
hh> group of black musicians is holding their convention on the
tail
hh> of ours and they are paying a lot more money for rooms than
we
hh> are. We had a similar situation in 1991 when we had to look
for
hh> more rooms. New Orleans has always been the record setter
for
hh> conventions to date whenever we have hosted it. I hope the
hh> national will keep that in mind for the future.

hh> Also, ever y time the national center decides to take
hh> reservations instead of letting us deal directly with the
hotels
hh> some kind of problem results in either lengthy delays in
hh> receiving confirmations or this kind of debacle with the
rooms.
hh> Hotels are better equipped to take reservations than we are
and I
hh> think in the future we should leave the reservation taking
to the
hh> hotels and let the hotels leave the problems of the blind to
us.
hh> This is also custodialism in its most blatant form; after
all,
hh> the next step may be that we have to book our flights,
trains or
hh> whatever through the center. I think for all N.F.B.
national
hh> functions we should be allowed to deal directly with the
hotel
 hh> and eliminate the middlemen.

Harvey, as usual you are exaggerating and taking things out of
context. When Dr. Jernigan made the reservations, he got as many
rooms as he could. At the time, it seemed like enough, but
conventions keep growing.
I do not think that the National Center takes reservations to be
custodial. It might well be that the hotels want us to do this
to save them work, and it is in part how we get cheaper rates.
