TG>Tom
Tom,
You are doing very well if you are connecting at speeds of 24,000 and
26,400 bit/s. Depending on where I call (and from where I call),
my carrier speeds will range from 21,600 bit/s to 28,800 bit/s on
average.
Unlike the slower modems, 28.8 modems are not designed to always connect
at their maximum speed. They will first probe the line for quality and then
establish the best speed carrier that they can given the current conditions
on the phone line between your modem and the modem you are calling. They are
designed to get the very most out of the phone lines, to push them to the
limit. Given the fact that the phone companies are not even required to
provide
the necessary bandwidth on the phone lines to establish a 28,800 bit/s
carrier,
you may not be able to achieve a 28,800 bit/s carrier on your phone line and
your carrier speeds may vary quite a bit. Do you see the same carrier speeds
regardless of where you call? Can you try using the modem from another
location
and on another phone line? Be sure and remove any telephonic devices
(answering
machines, dialers, surge protectors, etc) on the phone line connected between
the modem and the wall. This will be a test to see if any local device may
e
degrading the phone line quality. If this is the case, then putting the
devices
back on the line one at a time until your carrier speeds slow down again
ould
narrow the problem down to a specific device on the phone line.
Please let us know what you find.
