I think Voldemort is/was after Harry because Harry, and his
father before him, are direct descendants of Godric Gryffindor,
just as Voldemort is a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin.  I
also think this isn't common knowledge; Dumbledore knows, and
probably james Potter knew, but beyond that, i doubt anyone has
any idea.  And I think that Godric and Salazar were probably just
as much enemies as Harry and Malfoy (or Sirius and Snape), and
that that hatred has come down through the ages.

JK Rowling has also said in an interview that there's going to be
one more death that's going to be "very hard to write."  I
suspect it'll be Neville, either in the wrong place at the wrong
time as Cedric was, or trying to help Harry in some way (or
perhaps, to avenge his parents?).  I suspect he'll also be
awarded the Order of Merlin posthumously for his sacrifice....
maybe in book 6.
