There are definitely better options.  Pegasus/Mercury is
freeware or shareware and will work just fine on NW4.11 and
I think you can to SMTP (Internet email) with it as well. 
Novell's Groupwise is generally considered top of the line
if you need more than just email.  Check Novell's corporate
web site at http://www.novell.com/.  There is a Usenet
newsgroup for Groupwise as well, not sure what the name is
though.

You might want to ask this in comp.os.netware.misc also. 
Many, many more people there than here.

I would also suggest that you get your employer to pay for
some basic instruction in NetWare admin.  At least a CNA
course and test.  It will benefit them (you will be better
at doing your job) and you get an industry recognized
certificate.
