I use an "if" statement for something similar.
I have a data field that is either "m", "f" or "p" or "n". They stand 
for Male, Female, Plural or Neuter.
A typical statement might be:
Comes Now the above Plaintiff, by and through (If MERGEFIELD PlaSex6 = 
"m" "his" "(If MERGEFIELD PlaSex6 = "f" "her" "If MERGEFIELD PlaSex6 = 
"p" "their" "its"))) Attorney of Record ....
PlaSex6 is a field in my data base. The syntax may not be exactly right, 
but you have to insert it with the macro command title bar anyway.
