by serial port overruns, which can occur even if you have a 16550,
depending on how heavily tasked the system is, and if there are any
software conflicts.  With uploads, the problem is invariably on
the system you are uploading to. Usually if you are seeing CRC errors
with an external modem, you can put any external modem (of the same
speed) on the system and see the exact same problems (and that is a good
test to see whether the problem follows the modem or the system).  If
you are using the DSZ module for Zmodem transfers, you might try adding
the "-ha slow" parameter to the DSZ command line (handshake slow).
