Chevrolet Performance Crate Engine
Start-up and Break-in Oil Usage
All Chevrolet Performance Parts crate engines are delivered with an
installation/specification sheet that includes start-up and break-in
procedures. If lost or damaged, electronic versions of these documents are
available at Chevrolet Performance under the Extras tab.
It is very important to note the difference in engine oil used for engine
start-up and break-in depending on which crate engine you have. The
start-up oil and first-oil-change oil on a GEN 0, GEN 1 Small Block Chevy,
and all Big Block Chevy engines must be a high-quality conventional oil
[non-synthetic]. Per most instruction sheets, the second oil change will
occur at 530 miles. After the first 530 miles, during the second oil
change, synthetic oil can be used if desired, but do not break the engine
in on synthetic engine oil.
Contrary to the above engines, the newer LS-LSX series of engines should
be started up, broken in and always operated using high-quality synthetic
oil that meets or beats GM Standard GM4718M (this will be specified on the
oil label).
