subject: Just how stupid can this be

From: "Antti Kurenniemi"

Now I'm not happy with this Linux thing at all.

I'm trying to install Samba so that I could move files between my Windows
and Linux systems (I think Samba is what I need, right?), but it's getting
to be a bit too difficult for me (I'm going to a Linux training course in a
few weeks, maybe that'll help).

I burned the files to a cd from my windows box (Konqueror kept crashing
while downloading), and am now trying to set this thing up somehow. First,
Nautilus started crashing and will no longer work at all - which I don't
mind 'cause it was really stupid anyway. So I started Konqueror, and tried
running the rpm's from there - but it says that some "common"
file is required.

Okay, then I downloaded everything from the Samba download place, made a
new cd, and tried running that. Konqueror started crashing, and Nautilus
won't even run at all anymore. No biggie, I finally got Konqueror to run
enough so that I was able to see that I now have the Samba-common rpm which
I think is what was missing, and when I click on it it brings up a few
dialogs - and still doesn't want to install.

Okay, so maybe I can't do this straight from the cd, let's copy everything
to a temporary directory (which is what the readme file told me to do -
see, I read those!). Select all files from the cd, go to /home, create a
new directory, open it, hit Ctrl+V to paste, and it says "the file or
directory
/mnt/cdrom/samba/samba-common-2.2.7-1.1mdk-i586.rpm does not exist." Funny
thing is, it shows the exact file name that I was trying to copy! So, back
to the cd, try right-clicking and selecting Copy, seems okay, then directly
to the newly created folder, and again: file does not exist, with the exact
path and filename of the exact file I'm trying to copy.

Right, so how about I drag this file? Alright, start dragging, looks okay,
release mouse and bam! file does not exist.

So, the question is this: how can this really be this stupid? Are there any
file managers that actually work, and how can a file not exist if I am
dragging the file with the mouse? I am also able to run the file to a
certain point, so the cd shouldn't be faulty. Is there any way to install
anything without installing several things here and there - like, is there
an installer application or something for Samba (or anything else) that
would come with everything I need?

The more I try to use Linux the more I like Windows - it may be so-so in
security and such, but at least the basic, normal things, like copying a
file or installing an app, work without this sort of nonsense. This has
been nothing but headache.
