Barry,
    The init string that you use really depends on the specific
application that you are using.  Init strings are more software than
modem specific.  What modem application are you using? Also, please
issue an ATi3 to the modem and let us know what the modem returns so
that we can see exactly what version of the modem you have.  As for
maximum speed, the modem will be set for maximum speed with just
the factory default setting '&F', as long as your port speed is set to
38,400 bit/s or above.  If you are transferring uncompressed data, you
would gain throughput by opening the port at a higher speed.
