And finally there... the common.custom config file doesn't seem to work,
but adding
xset +fp
"/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi,/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi,/usr/share/fonts/X11/mi
sc"
to the xstartup file does the job.
