Hi Mike,
Yes, you have to buy it, and frankly, if you already have 4.10,
then 4.11 may not be worth it for you unless you specifically
need some of the Internet features that come with 4.11.
You'll trade in your 4.10 license and pay for the upgrade price,
not straight purchase price. If you're trading in a 250 to a 250
license,
your cost will be minimal, but if you wish to increase your license,
from 250 to 500 for instance, you'll pay a bit more.
The upgrade will work much like a 3.12 to a 4.x upgrade,
doing an "in place" migration, not an "over the wire" migration,
using same machine to do the upgrade Be sure to upgrade
all servers having a READ/Write replica stub first, and upgrade
the server having a MASTER/Replica last. Make sure you have
same version of DSREPAIR on all the boxes, latest version is 5.95.
It's important that the tree if sully synchronized after all upgrades.
However, you can mix 4.10 and 4.11 in your network. If you wish,
set up one box running 4.11 and use some of the features such as
an IPX/IP gateway, or use Border Manager and run an IP to IP
gateway, and setup an IntraNet Web Server with one 4.11 box,
and use the other boxes for file and print services, and directory
services.
If you're not planning to use IPX/P gateway, Internet Web Server,
FTP Server, etc, then I don't think 4.11 is going to give you much
more than 4.10 does.
Have fun and good luck.
Sincerely,
Alex G.
