subject: Digitran vs Sportster

Up til recently my later day modem experience has fortunately been
largely with USR Sportsters. A side from the good reliability and
support; the fact that when the modem goes on Line the modem Phone
socket is disconnected. This facilitates an almost 100% increase
in my cps throughput when I have the Line feed directly connected
from the Bell line terminal to the Line input socket of the USR
Sportster, and the rest of my phone system is connected to the
modem's Phone socket; thereby isolating all the noise signals away
from the susceptible to interference modem.
This has been much more effective then any attempts to filter, or
otherwise try to eliminate the effects of all the signal junk that
surrounds us these busy multiple electronic devices days (and
nights 8-). I highly reccomend the procedure to everyone suffering
less then expected cps thoughputs.
Unforetunately my new HP Pavilion 7280P platform came equiped with
a 33.6 Digitran Fax/Data/Voice modem that doesn't include this
feature of disconnecting it's Phone socket so I have had to resort
to manually disconnecting the rest of the phone system to maintain
the throughput I have learned to expect from my old 486 and it's
trusty Sportster 28.8 modem.
Is this disconnection of the Phone socket, when the modem picks up
the line, unique to the USR modems?
Is anyone familar enough with the HP Pavilion computers to advise
a possible signal available at either of the unused serial DB
outputs when the modem picks up the line so I can rig an extenal
relay to disconnect for me when I am on line please?
I have never seen Digitran modems before. Anyone have an address
for Digitran so I can inquire if my modem may be upgradeble to 56K
Ciao, Ack.
