Well, Pocahontas didn't marry John Smith, despite Disney.  She married
John Rolfe. And the marriage, as I recalled, was not a marriage of love.
It took place under great duress, after she was kidnapped by the British
and held hostage as a way of getting her people to agree to give the
British what she wanted. Her kidnapping was rather typical of how the
British at Jamestown were treating the Indians.  And, although the
Pilgrims may have survived that first year with the help of the local
Indians, it wasn't very long at all before those same people were
killing the Indians, and thanking god for the death of Indian babies.
There is a lot of doubt about whether John Smith's story of Pocahantas
saving him had any truth in it at all.  It almost cetainly did not
happen the way he says it did.  The fact that he didn't even *say* it
happened until after Pocahontas had married John Rolfe, and was becoming
popular in England; and the fact that John Smith was known to alter the
truth at times, indicates nothing even remotely resembling it may have
happened.
