Hehe, I just saw something in the Damark catalog that perked my interest
slightly. It was a pair of sub transducers you mount to your car's frame
to achieve the bass "feel" without the bass noise. You supposedly only get
the tactile bass without the audio. I wonder if anyone's tried this approach
in a home setup?

They would have loved my bent "frownie" I used to have when I had an EQ in
the house. (NOT!)

I tend to agree. I don't see the rock-solid engineering of the late 60s'
and early 70's in today's amps as much as I used to. However, the consumer
grade goods are amazing considering their cost. If someone goes to various
stores and auditions a wide array of products, they can get something that's
very pleasing.
Consider my age when I say this, I'm 39. When I was younger, the differences
in a given price range were much clearer then they are now. An entry-level
tape deck (only 1 record/play head) from 5 different manufacturs at the same
price point would show variations in workmanship that boggled the mind.
hese
days, a consumer grade cassette deck costing say $150 will be about the same
quality no matter who manufactured it. The consumer gets to pick between the
bells/whistles approach and the "no nonsense" approach.
When you consider how many bells/whistles are on low and mid-priced consumer
gear, I'd go for the "no nonsense" approach hands down and hope for some
honest engineering. Not to mention, the less bells and whistles there are
on the new piece, the less of these same bells and whistles will fall off!
