When they say "child," they mean teh adult female child, which is the mother. I often wonder if the best-interests ploy is just a way for some judges and attorneys to escape the inherent difficulty of their jobs. All they have to do is say they are acting in the child's interests. Then they can say that the child's interests correspond to the mother's interests. Then they can just do whatever the mother wants. Then they can collect their big salaries with little mental effort. Then they can inspire a cheesy TV show like "Judging Amy," with the aim of convincing us that it really is difficult to do what they do. The best-interests standard is absurd, as one can use it to justify anything. I could knock off a Quick Mart, show that the robbery benefitted some child, and some family court hack would set me free, if he followed the standard that his court routinely uses.
