Alternately, I'm guessing that you could control an IR LED with the
game port.

A third option is, get a converter box with timers. Not sure if there
are any, but I know there's satellite boxes and digital cable boxes
with timers - you set what program you want to record on the box, and
the box fires itself up at the specified time, and tunes to the
appropriate channel.
