I have my ISP Accunt set up in such a way that cgi-bin is possible. Once you
have a working 'script' (and that is where the hard part is it's fairly easy
to get it to run.
I have found the most difficult part of cgi/Perl is that it's extremely
difficult to test and impliment the script. First most ISP's use SunStaton's
(Unix) and most of the rest of us use PC's. Unix does not use cr/lf to end a
line. You must strip the line feed either at the ISP or before. The other
problem I have is there seems to be no 'Perl' emulator for the PC. Perl is
mostly 'interpereted' atleast at my ISP and the steps can be very stressful.
I am a fairly good programer (C, Basic, Cobol, Fortran etc) but it takes
upwards of a day to get even the simplest of CGI/Perl scripts to work.
For a counter you might look at Java/Java script. My cousin does much more
CGI then I do and a lot of Java programing. I think he has a web page with a
counter up. It's for a lady called 'tv-mom' you can view it by visiting:
www.spectra.net/~silvah .
There is a link to it there.
You should also look at a book store for a book called the 'blue camel' it's
the definative guide to Perl. My cousin let's me borrow his from time to
time.. It defines Perl and Inet perfectly. To me Perl is just a muddy under
powered 'C' but then most of cgi's do are sequence the display's.
