Hi Rocko!
Those KLH speakers were certainly fine for your computer, far better
than most of the speaker systems that are sold intended for computer
use. The K in KLH is Kloss though, not Paul Klipsch who came up with
the Klipsch line of speakers, which I am particularly fond of myself.
In the case of the KLH speakers, you probably didn't have enough
amplifier power to push them right.. Impedance (not resistance) is a way
of matching an amplifer to a speaker and is no indication on how much of
a load it can be, There's a bunch of other stuff that is all involved
with how much volume you can get out of a speaker system that is related
to speaker effieciencies, capacity in watts, amplifier power available,
and much more.
I do not recommend using ANY made for computer speaker system on the
market. I haven't heard ONE that even begins to sound as good as even
most of the lame stereo speakers out there. Maybe someone knows an
exception to this, but I have yet to see it (hear it). The way that
stereos are being sucked up into computers these days, with TV already
becoming common, sooner or later, people will get wise to these lousy
sounding speakers that most of the computer places are trying to sell as
"good" or even acceptable sound.
If you have line outs on your computer, then feed a seperate stereo
amplifier and drive a set of stereo speakers that you like the sound of
(like your KLH). With stereo speakers you may not be able to place them
along side the computer screen, as the magnets tend to mangle video
screens, but that shouldn't be a problem to most of us, just position
the speakers 30 degrees to each side of how you face the monitor,
and sonically you have the same thing, whereever the speakers end up
being, even if they are many feet away (preferably) from the monitor.
Cheap computer speakers must use either lame speakers to be along side a
monitor or use magnetic flux bending techniques in the cabinetry
which isn't cheap, so they use low magnetism speakers which usually
also means highly ineffecient.
Good luck in your quwest! Please let us know what you decided to do.
