The recovery partition contains data used to a) Refresh the machine: Recreate factory fresh OS, but keep all your personal data (documents, images, etc). Programs you installed will be removed. You'll have to do some updating, and reinstallation of programs. b) Reset the machine: remove everything, including personal files and data, and reinstall Windows. The machine will be like new. You'll have to do major updating, reinstallation of programs, and restoration of personal data folders/files. Advice: Before you do anything else, make recovery media, just in case. Then install Macrium or similar, and set up a regular backup/imaging plan (this is where external drives come in handy). FWIW, I didn't follow the above advice in the past, which is why I now urge other people to follow it.
