Not important to me personally.  Also I haven't run across anyone around
here using it.  Mostly win98 and xp in this neck of the woods and no dosemu
there either.

True but without the kernel none of this would be running at all. 
Bottomline for me is that if it doesn't work with what I have or can build,
and run on these machines with their specific kernels, then it won't
happen.  I gave up on DOS ages ago and thus dosemu.
